Voorhees, NJ -- The Philadelphia Flyers will begin a four-day
rookie camp on Monday, September 15, when 30 prospects, including
former Princeton forward Darroll Powe, take to the ice at the
Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone under the direction of
Philadelphia Phantoms head coach John Paddock.
The practice sessions, which begin at 10:00 a.m. and run for
approximately two hours from September 15-17, are free and open to
the public. Camp will culminate with a game against the Washington
Capitals rookies at the Caps' practice facility in suburban
Virginia on September 18 at 3:00 p.m.
Don Luce, the Flyers' director of player development, was asked
what his expectations are of the camp.
"I think it's just to get the players to come in, play against each
other, get to know each other, and start a little bit of
team-building and to see how they play against each other and
against NHL players."
Luce said that rather than focus on any of the players in
particular, he and the Flyers' brain trust will be looking at the
group as a whole to try and determine who stands out.
"I think everyone is under the same microscope," said Luce. "We're
all going to be looking at all of them and looking for signs of
progression. They have been working out since the summer camp, and
hopefully they've gotten better."
It will also be the first time that Paddock gets to see many of the
players that will be on his roster for the coming season. Paddock
replaced Craig Berube, now an assistant coach with the Flyers, as
the head coach of the club's American Hockey League affiliate for
its last season at the Wachovia Spectrum.
"For me, personally, it's good to familiarize myself with the
players and the organization," said Paddock. "For them, it should
be to give them as much tools in a short period of time to show
what they can do and encourage them to do what they do best.
"There are lots of people watching them, and then they'll get a
chance to participate in a game against the Washington Capitals'
rookies to show their wares there."
The camp will lead into the beginning of the Flyers' main training
camp on September 20, of which a schedule and roster will be
released at a later date.
