In life, nothing is guaranteed. Just because I signed a contract does not mean I will be on the ice for every single game. My present situation has truly made me realize how quickly things can change. Injuries are not fun for anyone, but when you are an athlete, and your job is to play hockey, injuries seem to hurt that much more. Three weeks ago I took a hit that has left me watching the game I love-instead of playing.
I was fortunate enough at Harvard to never miss a single
game in my four-year collegiate career. I have always known my
body, when to push it and when to rest. Unfortunately, even though
I can do my part there is an entire element of unknown that can
change any of our lives in a second. I have missed seven games and
will probably miss the rest of this month. In an 80 game season, it
is important to give your body enough time to heal. As much as I
want to be out there now, going back too early could aggravate my
injury and affect my ability to play in the long
run.
Since being injured, my daily routine has changed
significantly and lately has been pretty dull and a little too
repetitive for my liking. Upon arriving at the rink, I throw on
some shorts, and while the team goes on the ice for practice, I put
the ice on my injury.
