Former Crimson captain, NCAA Frozen Four Most Outstanding
Player and 13-year National Hockey League veteran Ted Donato '91 is
in his seventh season as The Robert D. Ziff '88 Head Coach for
Harvard Men's Ice Hockey. He owns a 95-107-20 record, three ECAC
title-game appearances and two NCAA tournament bids.
The 59th Annual Beanpot
Behind three second-period goals and 41 saves from Chris
Rawlings, Northeastern skated to a 4-0 victory against Harvard
(4-18-0, 3-13-0 ECAC Hockey, 0-7-0 Ivy League) in the semifinals of
the 59th Beanpot Monday evening at TD Garden. The Huskies advanced
to play No. 1 Boston College in the Feb. 14 championship, while
Harvard will face No. 14 Boston University in the consolation
game.
The Crimson registered a season high in shots, including 17 in the first period. Pier‑Olivier Michaud (Mont-Joli, Que.) led Harvard with seven shots on goal, while Rence Coassin (Hamden, Conn.) logged six.
Leading the Crimson
Alex
Killorn (Montreal, Que.) paces Harvard with seven goals.
With 16 points, he shares the team lead with linemate Michael
Biega (Montreal, Que.), Harvard's assists leader with
10.
Crimson Calendar
Harvard is 20-3-0 in February home games under Ted Donato
and 38-21-8 in all post-exam league games in Donato's six-plus
seasons.
The Bright Stuff
The Crimson is 59-35-3 (.624) at home under Ted Donato
and 281-128-28 (.675) all-time at Bright Hockey Center, which
opened in 1979-80.
Top of the [Blue] Line
Danny
Biega (Montreal, Que.) has 15 points
(6‑9‑15) to lead Harvard
defensemen. He is tied for the league lead among defensemen and
tied for 13th among all skaters with six goals in ECAC Hockey play.
He has totaled 14 points (6-8-14) in league games to tie
Princeton's Taylor Fedun for second in ECAC defenseman scoring, a
point behind Rensselaer's Nick Bailen (5‑10-15).
Biega is tied for 13th in league scoring among all players.
With six goals and nine assists overall, Biega averages 0.68 points per game, ranking him 20th nationally among defensemen.
Getting Defensive
Harvard has held four of its last five opponents to two
goals or fewer. The Crimson limited No. 3 Yale to its lowest
scoring output of the season Feb. 4 and held No. 12 Union, which
ranks seventh nationally in scoring offense, without a goal for
more than 46 minutes Jan. 22.
The Killers
The Crimson has fended off 27 of the last 29 power plays
it has faced. The only power-play tallies Harvard has allowed in
the last seven games were Locke Jillson's second-period game-winner
for Cornell (Jan. 29) and Brodie Reid's second-period goal for
Northeastern (Jan. 7). The Crimson was a season-best 6 for 6 on the
penalty kill at Northeastern (Jan. 19) and 5 for 5 at Union. The
Dutchmen own the nation's top power play.
Busy Crimson
Friday's game against Princeton begins a run of five
games in 12 days. That comes after Monday's Beanpot opener capped
stretches of four games in 11 days and seven games in 20 days for
Harvard. Only two of those seven games were at home.
Close Calls
Harvard has lost eight games by a single goal and another
game by two goals with one coming on an empty net. In 2011, five of
the Crimson's seven league games have been one-goal losses.
Hall of Famer
Bob McManama '73 became Harvard's 10th inductee to the
Beanpot Hall of Fame when he was honored between semifinal games
Monday. McManama totaled eight points on three goals and five
assists in six Beanpot games, including two final appearances.
McManama was a 1973 All-America selection and a two-time All-ECAC
and All-Ivy honoree.

Scouting the Tigers
Princeton (14-8-1, 9-6-1, 3-3-0) was 9-1-1 in its
previous 11 games before falling to No. 11 Union, 7-4, and No. 9
Rensselaer, 5-2, last weekend at home. The Tigers held a 4-1 lead
Friday before the Dutchmen rallied with six straight goals.
Princeton swept St. Lawrence and Clarkson a week earlier, extending
its road win streak to seven games.
Rookie Andrew Calof leads Princeton with 24 points and 19 assists, while Mike Kramer and Kevin Lohry share the team lead with nine goals each. Mike Condon has started the last two Fridays in the Tigers' goalie rotation. He owns a .907 save percentage and 2.70 goals-against average.

Crimson is 9-6-1 against Princeton under Ted Donato. Harvard has
swept two league playoff series from the Tigers—including
last season at Baker Rink—but Princeton scored a 4-1 win
against Harvard in the 2008 ECAC final.
