Thrashers Re-Sign Welch
The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed defenseman former Harvard
standout Noah Welch, according to General Manager Rick Dudley. Per
team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Welch, 27, who missed a majority of the season due to injury,
collected five points (one goal, four assists) in 37 regular season
games with the American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves.
The Brighton, Mass., native added two assists in 14 Calder Cup
Playoff games.
The 6-4, 220-pound defenseman has recorded nine points (four
goals, five assists) in 73 career NHL games with Pittsburgh,
Florida and Tampa Bay 2005 to 2009. He has also earned 64
points (17 goals, 47 assists) in 159 AHL games with Chicago,
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Rochester.
Prior to his professional career, Welch played four seasons of
college hockey at Harvard University (ECAC) from 2001 to
2005. He registered 76 points (23 goals, 53 assists) in 129
games and was named to the NCAA East First All-American Team
following his senior season.
Welch, who was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the second
round (54th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, signed with
Atlanta as a free agent on July 13, 2009.
