Down Memory Lane
The following article featuring former Harvard standout Lane MacDonald appeared in the February 2 issue of the Boston Herald.
By John Connolly
If reports are accurate from the rare Sunday mornings he plays
pickup hockey with fellow Harvard alums at Bright Hockey Center,
then 1989 Hobey Baker Award winner Lane MacDonald still knows his
way around the rink.
It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago MacDonald led the
Crimson to the NCAA title with a memorable 4-3 overtime victory
against Minnesota. MacDonald said it was Harvard’s Beanpot
championship earlier that season that jump-started the run.
“There were two things we had not done as a team,”
MacDonald, 42, said during the annual Beanpot luncheon. “No.
1 was win a Beanpot. No. 2, win a national championship. We
hadn’t been that close to winning a Beanpot. I think we had
played three straight consolation games. The national championship
we had been close in prior years.”
