When Pier-Olivier Michaud arrived at Harvard from his hometown of
Mont-Joli, Quebec, for his freshman year in the fall of 2007, he
acknowledged his English wasn't flawless. He grew up in a
French-speaking household and it wasn't until he went to Maine to
play for the Portland Junior Pirates of the Atlantic Junior Hockey
League as a 16-year-old that he learned the language. But the quick
study discovered early on that he could handle both the demands of
the classroom and hockey.
Last year, Michaud was eased into the mix, playing 19 games and
scoring 7 points, but this season the 20-year-old is expected to
make a regular contribution, as he did in the Crimson's season
opener last Friday when he potted a goal and added two assists in a
4-1 victory over Dartmouth. He followed that with a goal and an
assist Tuesday in a 3-1 win over Rensselaer.
"He was a guy who really kind of developed throughout the year [in
2007-08]," said Harvard coach Ted Donato. "The last third of the
year, he really kind of elevated himself. He was on the penalty
kill and was on one of our top three lines. He really started to
see more minutes. With the additional power-play time and a game
with as much special teams [as the early games have been showing],
he becomes even more important."
