The Long Road of a Goaltender: James Mello

The following article featuring Dartmouth goaltender James Mello appeared October 31 on the Dartmouth Web site.

This was originally written for the Dartmouth men's hockey program used for this past weekend's Ivy Shootout at Thompson Arena.

HANOVER, N.H. - The road taken by senior James Mello to his current position of No. 1 goaltender for the Dartmouth men's hockey team has not been the traditional one.

Mello began his career with the Big Green playing just 30:38 of action in net as a freshman. That has changed in three years as he now owns the top spot in the goal for the team and is the face of a program on the cusp of doing something that no other Dartmouth team has done in over three decades: reaching the NCAA Tournament.

In his first full season as a starter in 2010-11, Mello turned heads with his 17-9-3 mark and goals-against average of 2.21 as a junior. Now a senior, he has the expectations of being named to both the coaches' and media's preseason all-conference teams.
