Jones Named Candidate for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award
HANOVER, N.H. - Forward Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) of the Dartmouth men's hockey team has been named one of just 20 candidates from across the country for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award spotlights those student-athletes who excel both on the ice and in the classroom and community, while staying in school all four years.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Jones, one of the top players for the Big Green on the ice, has proven to be an asset for the program and the College as one of the most loyal and dedicated players at Dartmouth in recent memory.
The senior forward will be the Big Green's top returning scorer from a season ago after finishing second on the team in scoring with 29 points (8-21-29).
As for his work away from the ice, Jones has been recognized for his part in cleaning up several local churches both in the Hanover community as well as near his hometown in Georgia. He has also been part of a group that planted an organic garden at another local church and has read to local elementary school students in the Upper Valley as part of literacy programs.
Jones carries a 3.5 grade-point average at Dartmouth, majoring in economics with a focus in public economics and international finance. He has been named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team in each of his first three seasons and earned a spot on the Ivy League All-Academic Team as a freshman.
Jones is one of 20 from across the nation to be named a candidate and just one of three from ECAC hockey and the Ivy League to receive the honor. Cornell's Keir Ross and Brown's Jack Maclellan were also named as candidates Thursday afternoon.
The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I men's coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition.
