Fleming to Don 'C' for Big Green in 2010-11
HANOVER, N.H. -- At an informal team get-together the Dartmouth men's hockey team announced its end of the year awards as well as the 2010-11 captain and assistant captains.
Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) was the big winner of the night as he picked up the Friends of Men's Hockey leading scorer award as well as the Phelan award as the team's MVP. Fleming was also named the Big Green's 130th captain as he was chosen by his teammates and coaches as the player who will carry the team crest in 2010-11. He is looked to be the leader on and off the ice next season and was chosen because he is believed to be one who leads by a positive example each and every day.
Fleming earned the leading scorer award after racking up a career-high 39 points including seven last weekend during the ECAC Hockey playoffs. He earned his second All-Ivy award recently after being Dartmouth's top goal scorer for much of 2009-10.
Fleming played in all 32 games and finished with a team-leading 22 goals, including 10 on the power play. The MVP was given to Fleming because he demonstrated outstanding skill at his position, continued aggressiveness and team spirit, and deserved to be called the "Most Valuable Player of the Year".
The Smoyer Award was given to senior Kevin McCarthy (Stoneham, Mass.). The award is given to the team's unsung hero. He was a key member of the Big Green's blueline for four years as McCarthy saw action in five games this season. He recorded his first career point with a goal against Colgate late in the year.
Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) was presented with the team's McInnis Award which is given to the player that best represents the spirit, camaraderie, loyalty and dedication of the team. The senior defenseman was this season's team captain as he finished the year with nine points, playing in 30 games. For his career he played in 107 games, notching 32 points.
Sophomore Paul Lee (Garden City, N.Y.) was named the team's most improved player with the Manser Award. Lee appeared in 21 games, recording a career-high six points. He notched his first collegiate goal with back-to-back strikes against Brown and Union late in the season.
The Booma Award is given to the player that is chosen by his teammates and coaches as the first year member of the Dartmouth men's hockey team who, through determination, desire, dedication and ability earns the "Rookie of the Year". This year's award was given to Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.). Walsh played in 22 games, missing a few contests with a nagging injury. He tallied 10 points this season, eight goals and two assists. He recorded multiple-point games against Clarkson and Quinnipiac.
The assistant captainship was awarded to three players who have all given a considerable amount to the Big Green. Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.), Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) and Joe Stejskal (Grand Rapids, Minn.) were named assistant captains for 2010-11.
The three juniors have played in a combined 280 games with 163 points. Estoclet and linemate Fleming went back and forth as the team's scoring leaders all season.
Estoclet recorded a career-high 36 points and a team-leading 24 assists along with 12 goals. He had five power plays and two game winners. Estoclet recorded 27 of his points in league contests and earned his first All-Ivy award. He's appeared in 93 career games with 75 points.
Stephens and Stejskal were the Big Green's top defensive pair all season long.
Stephens played in 31 games and was Dartmouth's top scoring blueliner with 20 points. He earned both end of the year ECAC and Ivy League honors. Stephens has played in 94 career games with 61 points.
Stejskal recorded 10 points this season and played in all 32 contests. For his career he's has appeared in 93 games and has scored 27 points. He had back-to-back multiple point games late in the season with two points against both Colgate and Cornell.
