Jones Shines in Colorado's Burgundy/White Game
Former Dartmouth standout David Jones recorded a hat trick to
lead Team White to a 9-0 win over Team Burgundy Monday night in
Colorado's annual Burgundy/White Game.
Team White goaltenders Andrew Raycroft (7 saves) and Jason
Bacashihua (16 saves) combined for the shutout.
This year’s Burgundy/White Game was held at Cadet Ice Arena
on the grounds of Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. for
the second consecutive season after a strong showing a year
ago.
“It was a good competitive game, even if it was a little
lopsided on the scoreboard,” said Jordan Leopold. “I
think we all competed the way we need to and we’ll get better
from here.”
Leopold staked Team White to a 2-0 lead after the first period on
a pair of tallies. The defenseman first beat Peter Budaj from the
slot at 9:56 before notching another on a blast from the point at
16:53.
Team White stretched its lead to three goals on a Milan Hejduk
marker just 17 seconds into the second period. Hejduk’s shot
from the right faceoff circle eluded Burgundy netminder Tyler
Weiman, who had replaced Budaj after the first period.
A Cody McCormick goal at 4:55 and a second tally from Hejduk at
14:06 gave White a 5-0 lead after two frames.
Jones then took over the game in the third period. The forward
opened the final stanza with a nifty goal, swooping past two
defenders before tucking the puck past Weiman at 3:05.
The Guelph, Ontario, native then sandwiched a pair of goals around
a Tom Fritsche tally, notching his second goal of the contest at
6:40 before completing the hat trick with nine seconds
remaining.
“It’s nice to get out. We’ve obviously been
scrimmaging the last few days, but it’s nice to get the reps
out there,” said Raycroft, who was credited with the victory.
“It seemed like a lot of the guys were skating well, so
it’s a good start.”
