Hartwick Ready for Devils Challenge

Instead of taking it easy in the summertime, Cardiff Devils defenceman Mike Hartwick is preparing for a gruelling physical test.

"I'm training for a triathlon," said Hartwick.

However, with training camp for the Devils starting next month, Hartwick is concerned that he might lose his race before it even starts.

"But I'm afraid that I may run out of time with the season approaching to compete at the end of August," he said.

When Hartwick, 24, is not training for the triathlon, which usually involves a long swim, a longer bike ride and an even longer run, he is staying in shape on the ice.

"I'm spending the summer teaching at hockey camps in Northfield, Vermont at Norwich College for the Elite hockey schools," said Hartwick.

"It allows me access to the weight room, ice time and plenty of professional-level scrimmages with the staff."

Devils coach Gerad Adams signed Hartwick to beef up a defensive unit that lacked punch in 2007-08 and the 6-foot, 3-inch American will definitely solidify the Cardiff rearguard.

"I feel I can bring a number of both hockey and personality traits to the Devils," said Hartwick, who majored in History and Economics at Dartmouth College.

"On the hockey front, I can bring a strong physical presence while adding some offense from the blue line. I have been told that I skate well for a larger individual and tend to have a high plus-minus rating. I also enjoy being involved in the community, by volunteering my time mentoring and assisting in local outreach programmes."

Although Hartwick has already studied at a prestigious Ivy League institution, he will be continuing his education in South Wales by taking one of the Devils' places at Cardiff Business School. In addition to Hartwick, the revamped Cardiff blueline also features imports Wes Jarvis and Doug MacIver besides mainstay Jason Stone, with another D-Man to be signed.
