ITHACA -- John McCarron considered himself a goal-scorer when he arrived on the Cornell campus last summer, after scoring 24 goals and 57 points in 60 games of junior hockey last season with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL.

But through 13 games this season with the Big Red, he had yet to find the back of the net.

That all changed a week ago with his first period goal at mile-high Colorado College, which helped the Big Red pull off a mild 3-1 upset of the nation's sixth-ranked team. It gave the big rookie a much-needed boost of confidence, one he hopes to take into Cornell's ECAC Hockey stretch run, which starts Friday night at Quinnipiac.
