O'Byrne Earns Two-Year Deal with Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed former Cornell defenseman Ryan O’Byrne to a two-year contract through the 2012-13 season.

O’Byrne, 26, appeared in 64 games with Colorado after being acquired from Montreal on Nov. 11.  The Victoria, B.C., native tallied a career-high 10 points (0g/10a) while finishing second on the Avalanche in average time-on-ice at 20:24.  He led Colorado in hits (168), finished second on the club in blocked shots (126) and was third in penalty minutes (71).  The 6-foot-5, 234-pound defenseman also skated in three games for the Canadiens, tallying no points and four penalty minutes.

“Ryan brings size to our defense,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “We are pleased to have him under contract for the next two years and look forward to him continuing his career with our organization.”

Selected by Montreal in the third round (79th overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft, O’Byrne has appeared in 192 career NHL games, collecting 26 points (2g/24a) and 252 penalty minutes.
