Joe Nieuwendyk serves as the chief architect of the Dallas Stars. Doug Gilmour fills a similar capacity for the Ontario Hockey League's Kingston Frontenacs.
As general managers of their own teams, the Hockey Hall of Fame nominees positively gush over the Calgary Flames circa 1989 - a juggernaut constructed by then-general manager Cliff Fletcher and his assistant, Al MacNeil.
"A special group of guys," Nieuwendyk said via a conference call with national media. "We battled hard for each other, and we won."
