ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland — One of the most iconic phrases in hockey is Foster Hewitt’s opening to Hockey Night in Canada radio broadcasts:
“Hello, Canada, and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland.”
Hewitt could use that up until 1949 when Newfoundland, formerly a British colony, joined Canada.
