For Joakim Ryan, the Clark Cup-winning Fighting Saints defenseman who now skates for the Big Red of Cornell, the transition from the USHL to college hockey came nearly as easily as he could have hoped.
“I think the transition went really well,” he said. “It wasn’t too hard at all coming from the USHL. I felt like the pace of the game was pretty much the same; I guess the only difference is that guys in college are a little bit stronger and bigger than guys in the USHL.”
Ryan’s on-ice production has been immediately apparent – he has averaged a point-a-game through his first five college contests with three goals and two assists. Off the ice, he is often around familiar faces from his USHL days. He jokingly says that he shows his Clark Cup championship ring to roommates Brian Ferlin (formerly of the Indiana Ice) and John McCarron (formerly of the Lincoln Stars) “all the time”.
