Iggulden to Play in Sweden

The Växjö Lakers (Sweden) announced the signing of former Cornell standout Mike Iggulden for the 2011-12 season. Iggulden joins the Lakers from Langnua (Switzerland) where he spent the 2010-11 campaign.

A member of the Big Red from 2001 through 2005, Iggulden appeared in 50 regular-season contests with Langnau of the National League A (Switzerland), amassing 40 points, including 12 goals. He added two assists in four playoff games.

“We see Mike as one of our two top centers," said Henry Evertsson, sporting director of the Lakers. “Mike has been popular in every club he played for and is captain material. He works hard in every match.

“Mike is trained at Cornell University, which is one of the strongest defensive schools in North America. Our Swedish centers are more complete than the North American, but with the defensive training that you get at Cornell is an ideal basis to have when the player later gets a more aggressive role.”

A two-time American Hockey League (AHL) All-Star, Iggulden spent the 2009-10 campaign with Dinamo Riga of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He compiled 33 points, including 13 goals, in 55 KHL contests.

In 2008-09, the native of St. Catharines, Ontario, was a member of the New York Islanders organization. Iggulden played 11 contests with the Islanders, netting one goal and four assists. He played in 72 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, compiling 25 goals and 41 assists.

Iggulden played 78 games during the 2007-08 campaign with the Worcester Sharks, scoring 29 goals and 37 assists for a career-high 66 points, tops on the Sharks. The Cornell University graduate totaled 81 goals and 90 assists for 171 points over three seasons with San Jose's AHL affiliate. He was recalled by San Jose for his first career National Hockey League (NHL) February 18, 2008, against the Islanders.
