Cornell Red-White Game to Benefit CARE Fund
ITHACA, N.Y. — The Red-White Game has kicked off the
Cornell hockey season for years, but the 2011-12 version of the
event will be like no other in a variety of ways.
Aside from seeing the Big Red men's hockey team for the first
time, this season's Red-White Game will also feature the national
semifinalist Cornell women's hockey team and a postgame
meet-and-greet autograph session with the players, all while
raising money for the university's Emergency CARE Fund.
The game is at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Lynah Rink.
Admission to the game is free, but donations are suggested upon
entry. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase, with
proceeds benefitting the Cornell Hockey Association.
Fans are also encouraged to show their support for their favorite
players by wearing either red or white, depending on which team
their favorite player is on. Whichever team is represented better
at the game will receive a point in the men's squad's Red-White
team-building challenge. There will even be a Red band and a White
band.
The Emergency Cornellians Aiding and Responding to Employees
(CARE) Fund is a program offering financial assistance to faculty
and staff who have experienced a non-recurring sudden or
emergency-related financial hardship due to an unforeseen or
unavoidable event. Some of the events that fund recipients have
endured include house fires and unforeseen medical or funeral
expenses, but the devastating floods that hit the area in early
September has decimated the fund.
“It's driven by donations from anyone in the Cornell
community who wants to help out,” said Beth
McKinney, director of the Cornell University Wellness
Program and chair of the CARE Fund committee. “There have
been a lot of employees in need as of late. (As of Oct. 4), we have
received 39 flood applications, and we expect more. Right now, the
money is going out faster than it's coming in.”
Emergency CARE will also be hosting an online auction from Oct.
11-19 and a live auction from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20
at the G10 Biotechnology Building to raise money. There are more
than 100 items in all, ranging from private sailing lessons, to
cases of wine, to a bowling party package, to a private dinner for
six catered by one of the university's chefs. The goal for all of
the events is to raise at least $10,000.
The game itself will resemble previous versions with regular
power-play situations and a shootout at the end of the contest. The
men's teams and women's teams will rotate in-game, then area youth
hockey players will take the ice during the intermission.
