It's not often an NHL player is thrilled to learn he'd need a third surgery in one season. But that was the case for new Canucks winger Byron Bitz.
The banger who hopes to make some noise on the Canucks fourth line this season was overcome with relief when doctors told him he'd need hip surgery in March. That's because a specialist in New York finally figured out what was wrong with him.
This past season was a lost one for Bitz, one of the Canucks most recent free agent signings. He had sports hernia surgery in October and never returned. Tough break for the right winger who finished strong to close out the 2008-09 season for the Boston Bruins. He made the team the next year out of camp but was traded in 2010 to Florida, the central part of the deal that got the Bruins defenceman Dennis Seidenberg. But in Florida Bitz only played seven games. And none last season.
