Ferlin Breaks Ice

The following article featuring Cornell incoming freshman Brian Ferlin appeared in the July 6 issue of the Florida Times Union.

Hundreds of black scuff marks, maybe thousands, speckle one side of the Ferlins' garage at their home in Glen Kernan. There's a tattered hockey net sitting in the back, its frame dented from hours and hours of practice shots.

Since he was in middle school, Brian Ferlin would shoot and work on his puck-handling skills in this garage. He sometimes shot off a piece of Plexiglas, other times through the added pressure of resistance bands, practicing through North Florida's searing heat when he wasn't on the ice.

He broke a few windows, so the family boarded them. A neighbor sometimes stood outside his home to listen to the sound - an unusual one for Jacksonville.
