Devin Named MVP, Ross Captain for 2011-12 at Cornell Awards Banquet
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's hockey team held its annual
awards banquet at the Lake Watch Inn on Saturday night, and
senior Joe Devintook home the night's top honor,
winning the Nicky Bawlf Award as the team's most valuable player.
In addition, the captains for the 2011-12 season were announced,
with current junior Keir Ross selected to lead
the team next season.
Devin took home an additional pair of awards on the night, winning
the Sam Woodside Award and the Joe DeLibero and Stan Tsapis Awards.
Other award winners on the evening included Ross, Patrick
Kennedy, Dan Nicholls, Tyler
Roeszler, Mike Devin and Andy
Iles. Each award, including the team captains, were voted
upon by the players on the 2010-11 roster.
Devin led the team in goals in his final season, tallying 17 goals
with 10 assists for 27 points, second-highest total on the roster
behind sophomoreGreg Miller's 29. His play on the year
included five game-winning goals, with three of those coming in
overtime.
In addition to the Most Valuable Player Award, Devin received the
Sam Woodside Award for overall career improvement by a senior and
the Joe DeLibero-Stan Tsapis Award for skilled efficiency,
unselfish dedication and hard-nosed competitive desire.
Patrick Kennedy took home the Bill Doran
Sportsmanship Award for his season, a year that saw him pick up
nine points on two goals and seven assists. While the offensive
production was down from previous seasons, Kennedy contributed with
his leadership to a very young squad.
The Cornell Hockey Association Award was presented
to Dan Nicholls. The award, presented to the player
whose contributions to the team don't show up in the box score, but
rather are in the form of energy, heart and hustle, went to the
senior who was one of the biggest hitters in ECAC Hockey. Nicholls
finished the season with six points on six assists.
Tyler Roeszler won the Mark Weiss Memorial Award,
presented to a senior with a career-long dedication and passion for
the sport of hockey. Roeszler finished third on the team in scoring
with 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists in his final season,
easily the best year of his career at Cornell.
Mike Devin claimed the Crimson Cup, given to the
player who was the standout performer in the season series against
Harvard. In two games against the Crimson this season, Devin scored
a goal in the win at Harvard and finished the two-game set with a
+1 rating.
Ross received the Iron Man Award, presented to the player who
showed determination to overcome injuries. Ross played in 33 of the
34 games on the year and was one of the team's top stay-at-home
defensemen, contributing three assists on the offensive end.
The Greg Ratushny Award for the most promising rookie went to Iles
for his play in goal. Iles played in 18 games and posted an 8-7-2
overall record to go along with a .914 save percentage and a 2.49
goals-against average.
Ross was selected as the team captain for the 2011-12 season, and
will be joined in a leadership role by fellow rising
senior Sean Collins and rising
junior Nick D'Agostino.
