Scrivens Sensational in NHL Debut (with Video)
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Cornell standout Ben Scrivens made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut Thursday with Toronto stopping 38 shots to lead the Maple Leafs to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.
Scrivens, who was recalled from the Toronto Marlies of the
American Hockey League (AHL) on October 27, was sensational
stopping 38 of 39 shots as the Maple Leafs were outshot by the Blue
Jackets, 39-18.
"Anytime you play your first game you want to make a good
impression. Hopefully I did that,'' said Scrivens. "You can't do
that without a good team playing in front of you. The guys did a
good job of blocking some shots out there.''
Scrivens was at his best in the opening period, preserving a 1-0
lead by stopping Kris Russell with a blocker save at the doorstep
and also stoning Rick Nash from in close. The 25-year-old
goalie was the picture of calm in his first start and appearance in
the NHL.
“Just sleeping,” said Scrivens, when asked how he spent Thursday afternoon leading up to the game, especially since he only learned at the morning skate the he would be replacing Jonas Gustavsson in the Leaf nets.
“I know my routine, I’m not a superstitious guy. . . . I took a short nap, I read a little, then I got ready and came to the game.”
Scrivens has played 38 minor league games with the Marlies since spending four seasons at Cornell.
