ITHACA -- It was easy to attribute a good portion of the Cornell men's hockey team's slow start to its youth.

So now that the Big Red has heated up, it should come as no surprise that one of the leading reasons is how much those younger players have improved -- particularly freshman defensemen Mathieu Brisson and Kirill Gotovets.

"You look at Nick (D'Agostino) and Braden (Birch) last year, and they both had their growing pains," Cornell coach Mike Schafer said of his last crop of new defensemen. "Both missed games early in the year, because we had a deep group of defensemen. Same thing; I think both of them started to take off this time last year."
