HCA Tabs Ferlin as National Rookie of Month
ITHACA, N.Y. – Men’s hockey freshman Brian
Ferlin’s November to remember piled up one more accolade
Friday afternoon, when the Hockey Commissioners Association
announced that the Big Red forward has been named its National
College Hockey Rookie of the Month.
Ferlin beat out a field of college hockey’s other Division I
conferences’ Rookies of the Month, including
Mercyhurst’s Daniel Bahntge (AHA), Miami’s Austin
Czarnik (CCHA), Nebraska-Omaha’s Jayson Megna (WCHA) and New
Hampshire’s Grayson Downing (Hockey East). He was named ECAC
Hockey’s Rookie of the Month earlier in the week.
The 6-foot-2, 201-pounder is the first Jacksonville, Fla. native
to ever be selected in the NHL Entry Draft, having been scooped up
by the Boston Bruins in the fourth round of June’s draft. He
is a natural choice for Rookie of the Month since he currently
leads the nation in rookie scoring with an average of 1.22 points
per game. He had five goals and six assists for 11 points, all
during a seven-game point streak that included a five-game Cornell
winning streak. Seven of those points came over a span of three
road games early in the month, helping the Big Red close out
November atop the ECAC Hockey standings with a 5-1 league mark.
Ferlin leads ECAC Hockey in scoring with 10 points in six
conference games, leading to consecutive ECAC Hockey Rookie of the
Week selections on Nov. 8 and Nov. 15. He has been reliable at both
ends of the ice, posting a plus-9 rating while also holding down a
spot on the first power-play unit.
Ferlin is also eligible for the U.S. team at the World Junior
Championships, which runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5 in Alberta.
Originally an emergency fill-in at the National Junior Evaluation
Camp in August, Ferlin had an outstanding showing to become a
legitimate candidate for the WJCs. The preliminary roster is
expected to be announced Monday, Dec. 5.
Cornell, which is ranked 17th in the latest USCHO.com poll, closes
out the fall semester portion of its schedule with games against
visiting St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday,
Dec. 3, respectively.
