ITHACA -- Although Riley Nash has left for the lucrative waters of the National Hockey League, characterizing Cornell's 2010-11 season as a rebuilding effort is taboo within the program.
With seven players gone from last season's ECAC Hockey championship team, Cornell coach Mike Schafer acknowledges that this season will be a transition from the old guard to the new. With Nash forgoing his senior season to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, it also creates openings on the Big Red’s top forward line and both special teams units.
"It presents a lot of opportunities for other guys that wouldn't be there," Schafer said. "With Riley coming back, he eats up a lot of minutes on the power play and penalty kill and different aspects of the game, and (he) played with our best offensive players. It moves everybody up the depth chart. It's a fresh start for a lot of guys."
