Team Notes: Big Red Looks to Regain Share of Top Spot

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men’s hockey team will look to bounce back from a heart-wrenching 2-1 overtime loss to Yale on Saturday when it opens up a three-game road trip on Tuesday, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. contest against Colgate. A win over the Raiders would lift the Big Red back into a tie for first place atop the ECAC Hockey standings with Yale. Tuesday’s game can be seen live throughout the Central New York region on Time Warner Cable Sports, and can be heard in the Ithaca area on WHCU 870 AM, with Jason Weinstein providing the call. Live streaming audio of the game can also be heard through the Cornell Redcast subscription service.

ABOUT THE BIG RED
For the second straight weekend, Cornell split its two games, winning the Friday contest before falling on Saturday. This weekend, it was a 5-3 win over visiting Brown before the heart-breaking 2-1 overtime loss to Yale on Saturday. Senior Colin Greening had three goals on the weekend, including two against Brown, while junior Riley Nash had three assists in his first two games back after missing four contests due to injury. Senior goaltender Ben Scrivens was strong in goal on the weekend, stopping 24-of-27 shots on Friday before making a career-high 52 saves on Saturday against Yale. For the season, senior Blake Gallagher leads the Big Red offense with 29 points in 24 games (15-14--29). Greening shares the team lead in assists with 14 to go along with his 11 goals for 25 points. In goal, Scrivens has a 2.03 goals-against average, ranking third in the country, and a .929 save percentage, fourth-best in the nation, with four shutouts. The Big Red special teams have been successful this season, ranking sixth in the nation and converting on 25-of-113 power-play chances (22.1 percent) while successfully killing off 104-of-118 opponents’ power-play opportunities (88.1 percent), good for third in the country.

ABOUT COLGATE
Like Cornell, Colgate has split its last two weekends, most recently Colgate dropping a 6-3 contest to Yale on Friday before rebounding with a 6-2 win over Brown on Saturday. The Raiders got a pair of goals from Jason Williams in the win over the Bears, with Brian Day tallying three points on a goal and two assists. For the season, Austin Smith has a team-best 33 points on 11 goals and 22 assists in 29 games, while David McIntyre has 30 points on nine goals and 21 assists in 28 contests. Day leads the team with 17 goals, going along with his 12 assists for 29 points in 27 contests. In goal, Alex Evin has played most of the time of late for the Raiders, posting a 2.82 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. Colgate’s power-play unit has converted on 26-of-147 chances (17.7 percent) while killing off 114-of-146 opponents’ power plays (78.1 percent).
