When the dust settled after Cornell’s disappointing NCAA tournament opening-round loss to New Hampshire, the Red recognized that the immediate future would be very different in the absence of some of the greatest players in team history. Off to the NHL was the leadership of forward Colin Greening ’10 and the game-saving plays of goaltender Ben Scrivens ’10. The stellar defense of Brendon Nash ’10 and the powerful wrist shot of younger brother Riley Nash also departed the Red — albeit one season earlier than expected — for the highest ranks in the hockey world, leaving Cornell with a young group of players looking to make a name for themselves in the ECAC.
For the leaders of this youthful squad — senior co-captains Joe Devin and Patrick Kennedy — the key to success is finding a new identity to lead the Red back to the NCAA tournament, while keeping in mind all that was learned from some of the greatest ever to wear the home whites at Lynah Rink.
“Patrick and Joe are great mentors … but that group of players needs to do more than just lead — they’ve got to lead and perform,” said head coach Mike Schafer ’86. “They know that. They’re hungry for this team to have success … they’re good kids and they’ve done a great job.”
