ITHACA, N.Y. -- Having clinched a bye for the first round of the
upcoming ECAC Hockey tournament, the Cornell men’s hockey
team heads to Yale and Brown this weekend in search of fulfilling
goal number two for the season, that of a regular-season
championship. Cornell enters the weekend three points behind Yale
and two behind Princeton, and could use some help to snare first
place in the ECAC Hockey standings. Both games can be heard in the
Ithaca area on WHCU 870 AM, with Jason Weinstein on the
play-by-play, while live streaming audio of the two contests will
be available through the Cornell RedCast subscription service.
Cornell jumped back into the race for first place with a sweep
last weekend over Rensselaer and Union at Lynah Rink. The Big Red
opened the weekend with a 4-1 victory over the Engineers before
capping the series with a 5-2 victory over Union on Senior Night on
Saturday. Riley Nash was the key figure in both games, picking up
two assists on Friday and recording his first career four-point
night on Saturday, scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists.
Tyler Mugford scored two goals on Friday night, while Keir Ross
chipped in his first two goals of his career in Saturday
night’s win. Ben Scrivens stopped 24 shots on Friday and
another 29 on Saturday to continue his solid play this season and
pick up another pair of victories.
For the season, Riley Nash leads all scorers with 28 points on 11
goals and 17 assists, with the 11 goals leading the team and the 17
assists tied with Blake Gallagher for team-high honors. Colin
Greening has 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points, while Gallagher
has five goals and 17 assists to join the pair over 20 points for
the season. Brendon Nash has two goals and 11 assists to lead all
defensemen in scoring, while Locke Jillson has a goal and five
assists to lead all freshmen. In goal, Ben Scrivens has seen the
vast majority of time, posting a 1.62 goals-against average and a
.940 save percentage, ranking second and first in the country,
respectively. The Big Red has also converted 23-of-143 power play
chances (16.1 percent) and killed off 121-of-141 opponents’
chances (85.8 percent).
