Team Notes: Big Red Closes Home Portion of Fall Semester vs. Colgate

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men’s hockey team closes out the home portion of the fall semester on Tuesday when it battles travel partner Colgate in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink. The Big Red will be seeking to get back into the win column after suffering a 3-2 loss to Quinnipiac on Saturday in Ithaca. Tuesday’s game can be heard on the radio on WHCU 870 AM in the Ithaca area with Jason Weinstein providing the call. Additionally, live video of the game will be available through the Cornell Redcast subscription service.

ABOUT THE BIG RED
Cornell garnered its second straight weekend split, picking up a 5-2 victory over Princeton on Friday night before falling to Quinnipiac, 3-2, on Saturday. Senior Blake Gallagher and junior Joe Devin led the way on Friday night, with Gallagher tallying two goals and an assist and Devin recording three assists. Senior goaltender Ben Scrivens stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the contest. On Saturday, Cornell allowed a pair of first-period goals to the Bobcats, who added a third in the second period, before beginning a furious rally that fell just short. Sophomore Sean Collins and freshman John Esposito scored goals for the Big Red in the final five minutes of the third period, but Cornell could not get the tying goal. Scrivens stopped 16 of the 19 shots he saw on the night in the loss. For the season, Gallagher and classmate Colin Greening share the team lead with 12 points apiece, while Joe Devin is third with 10 points through seven games. Scrivens has played every game in goal for the Big Red, posting a 2.01 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage to go along with a 5-2 record and one shutout. Cornell’s special teams have converted on 11-of-37 power-play chances (29.7 percent) while killing off 36-of-39 opponents’ power plays (92.3 percent).

ABOUT COLGATE
Colgate has surprised many by climbing to second in the league standings with a 4-1-1 mark in the early goings of league play. Colgate has a trio of players in double figures in scoring through 13 games, with Austin Smith leading the way with eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points. David McIntyre has a team-best 14 assists to go along with four goals for 18 points, while Brian Day is tops on the team in goal scoring with nine, chipping in three assists for 12 points. The Raiders have had a rotating tandem in goal with Charles Long and Alex Evin sharing time. Long has a 3.09 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage, while Evin has posted a 3.53 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage. Colgate’s power play has converted 9-of-66 chances (13.6 percent) while killing off 54-of-66 opponents’ power plays (81.8 percent).
