New Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk pulled aside Mike Modano on two occasions during a road trip to California this weekend and whispered a few words of confidence.

Modano was sat down for all but a couple of minutes of the third period and overtime in the Stars' shootout win in San Jose, as coach Marc Crawford chose to go with the young legs of center Tom Wandell. And while Modano could have easily been upset by the decision, Nieuwendyk made it a point to check in with his good friend and former teammate.

"I think it's clear we like how he is playing, and that was just a choice that needed to be made at the time," Nieuwendyk said. "And if you look at how Mike handled it, I thought he came back and had a great game against Los Angeles the next night."
