Shades of Dryden? Goalie Makes Cornell a Powerhouse

The following article featuring Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens appeared January 16 on the New York Times Web site.

Eight of the top 10 teams in this week’s uscho.com rankings are from college hockey’s power conferences (C.C.H.A., W.C.H.A. and Hockey East). But there are two Ivy League teams representing the E.C.A.C. in that top tier, and Cornell is all the way up to fifth. The Princeton Tigers are No. 10 this week, though they are ahead of the Big Red in the conference standings by two points. But the Tigers are off this week, and Cornell (11-1-3) has two conference games against New York State foes with a chance to solidify its ranking and take the top spot in the E.C.A.C.

Cornell takes a short bus trip to Union tonight and visits Rensselaer (better known as R.P.I.) tomorrow. And if the pattern holds, the Red shouldn’t have any trouble winning on the road. Cornell has just one loss this season, which came at North Dakota (and was avenged with a win the next night). And Brandon Thomas of The Ithaca Journal reports that Cornell is especially comfortable at Union’s Messa Rink after pulling a playoff upset there last season.

As was the case the last time Cornell won a national championship (1970, when Ken Dryden backstopped the team to a 29-0-0 season), a goalie is showing the way.
