MONTREAL – Ryan O'Byrne doesn't look at this as a number
lost. He views it as history gained.
The Canadiens' hulking defenceman surrendered his uniform number
to the thin air of the Bell Centre's rafters Friday night, the No.
3 of former captain Émile (Butch) Bouchard being hoisted in
retirement.
Having worn the number for all 85 of his regular-season and
playoff games with Montreal, O'Byrne switched Friday to No. 20 when
the Canadiens retired No. 3, worn by Bouchard through the 1940s and
'50s during his Hall of Fame career.
