Ken Hitchcock had a secret weapon when he coached the Stars.
If Hitchcock, in his first gig as an NHL head coach, ever felt he
was losing touch with his team, he sought one source in particular
– veteran center Joe Nieuwendyk.
"I used to tap his brain all of the time, because he was so smart
and so observant," said Hitchcock, now the coach of the Columbus
Blue Jackets. "He understood the players, and he understood team
chemistry. We always talk about the 'pulse of the team.' Well, Joe
Nieuwendyk always had the pulse of the team."
