Flying Under the Radar
The following article featuring former Cornell forward Kevin McLeod appeared April 17 on the Central Hockey League (CHL) Web site.
When Texas Brahmas Head Coach Dan Wildfong signed forward Kevin
McLeod one would speculate if he even knew totally what he was
getting. After all, the Calgary native didn't score a single
goal in his time with Cornell University where he played 13 games
between 2003-2007.
He came into professional hockey as a guy who had good size (6-3,
238 pounds) but who hadn't showed a lot of offensive skill
previously. He played 55 games in the Alberta Junior Hockey
League (a lower tier junior league in Canada) before heading to
Cornell and scored just 11 goals splitting time with Camrose and
Calgary.
With the Brahmas, it didn't take long to show some offense scoring his first professional goal on opening night in a 5-4 win at Austin. In fact, he has five points (2-3=5) in his first six professional games showing he belonged and giving the Brahmas a boost to an early 6-1-0 record.
After scoring just four goals in his next 43 games, McLeod hit a hot stretch late in the season helping to fuel Texas' remarkable finish to the regular season with six goals and 13 points in the Brahmas final 15 games.
In the post-season, McLeod has been very steady carrying a team-best +4 plus/minus rating and contributing seven points (1-6=7) in 10 games.
McLeod and the Brahmas play game four of their Northern Conference Finals series with the Colorado Eagles on Friday night at the NYTEX Sports Centre.
