Cornell Pays Tribute to Garner with Bear Toss

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's hockey team has teamed up with several area organizations for a pair of community outreach programs that will take place at Friday night's men's hockey game against Massachusetts at Lynah Rink.

Friday's game will mark the culmination of the Second Annual Steve Garner Teddy Bear Toss to benefit the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes, the Franziska Racker Centers and the Ithaca Cops, Kids and Toys campaign. Fans may purchase bears at Friday night's game and throw them onto the ice after the contest to be donated to the Cops, Kids and Toys effort. The funds raised from the sale of the bears will be divided between the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes and the Franziska Racker Centers. Bears will be on sale for $10 each with the goal of raising a total of $10,000 for the two organizations.

Conceived by senior co-captain Topher Scott, the Teddy Bear Toss honors the memory of Steve Garner, the late president of the Tompkins Trust Company who passed away in the spring of 2006. Garner, a long-time Cornell hockey supporter, was heavily involved with various community groups, several of which benefit from the bear toss named in his honor.

Additionally, the Cornell men's hockey program invites fans to bring new children's books to Friday night's game to be distributed to low-income families in the Ithaca area to give to their children as holiday gifts through the Give the Gift of Family Reading, the Family Reading Partnership's annual holiday book drive. Fans may also donate funding for the purchase of new books. All donations for this effort will enter fans into a drawing to win a hockey stick signed by the 2007-08 team and a $100 gift certificate to The Boatyard Grill.

Cornell closes out the fall semester with Friday night's game against Massachusetts. Game time is 7:30 p.m. following the Big Red women's contest vs. Quinnipiac at 4 p.m.
