Larkin Wins Gold
HAMILTON, N.Y. – On Saturday,
Colgate sophomore Thomas Larkin and Team Italy
won the gold medal at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation
Division IA World Championships in overtime with a 4-3 win over
Hungary.
With the win, the Italians will jump up to the Top Division and
will compete against the likes of the United States, Canada and
Russia. Italy held on for the win in overtime after giving up a 3-1
lead after the first period. Larkin had one shot and a minus-1
rating in the win.
The Italians took an early 1-0 lead with a goal coming 3:36 into
the game and added another one at the 10-minute mark to increase
the lead to 2-0. Hungary fought back with a power play goal 1:42
after the Italians earned the 2-0 lead. Italy got its lead back up
to two goals with a power play goal with 49 seconds left in the
period.
Hungary scored the only goal in the second period coming midway
through the frame. The Hungarians tied the game early on in the
final period, which set up the overtime period. The extra time only
lasted 56 seconds as the Italians put home their second power play
goal of the game as the Hungary penalty carried over from the third
period.
Larkin was the youngest player on the squad and he is the first
Italian-trained NHL Draft Pick. He was also playing in his
first-ever international event. He finished the tournament with a
goal on five shots and a plus-1 rating.
