Colgate Announces Class of 2015
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Head coach Don Vaughan and the Colgate men’s hockey team will be welcoming five new members as part of the Class of 2015.
The group features three players from the United States and two from Canada. There are players from California, New York and Massachusetts, while the final two are from Alberta and Quebec.
“This group of student-athletes will fill precisely some of the needs of our team moving forward,” said Vaughan. “With the addition of Lidgett, Wilson and Gentzler, we have added speed and skill at the forward position and Goulakos and Corcoran add size and a physical presence on defense to go along with their excellent puck moving skills.”
Brendan Corcoran
Milton, Mass./Bay State Breakers (EJHL)
Before Colgate: Played one year at St. Sebastian’s School of the Independent School League, before joining the Bay State Breakers of the Eastern Junior Hockey League … appeared in 88 games for the Breakers over two seasons and posted 12 goals and 40 assists for 52 points as a defenseman … had 10 goals and 17 assists in his final year … was team captain and team MVP in his second year … two-time EJHL All-Star and was named a All-Independent School League performer in 2009 … won the Greater Boston League State Championship in 2008.
Personal: Brendan Ford Corcoran is the son of Frank and Virginia Corcoran and was born in Boston, Mass. … was a member of the National Honor Society at St. Sebastian’s.
Daniel Gentzler
Manhattan Beach, Calif./Surrey Eagles (BCHL)
Before Colgate: Attended Mira Costa High School before moving on to play junior hockey in both the North American Hockey League and British Columbia Hockey League … won the California State Championship in 2009 with Mira Costa as team captain … joined the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the NAHL for the 2009-10 season and posted 13 goals and 28 assists for 41 points … moved to the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL in 2010-11 … scored 15 goals and added 25 points for 40 points as a alternate captain … named the hardest worker by the Eagles in 2010-11.
Personal: Daniel Gentzler is the son of Dave Gentzler and Kay Johnson and was born in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Spiro Goulakos
Montreal, Que./St-Jerome Panthers (QJAAAHL)
Before Colgate: Played junior hockey since the 2007-08 season and has skated for two different teams in the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League … appeared for the Vaudreuil-Dorion Mustangs in 2007-08 … tallied 18 points on four goals and 14 assists on the blueline … accumulated 125 penalty minutes … had 44 points on 16 goals and 28 helpers in 48 games in his second year with the Mustangs … moved on to the St-Jerome Panthers in 2009-10 and had 41 points on eight goals and 33 assists … had 13 goals and 43 helpers for 56 points in 45 games in 2010-11 … first team all-star and selected as the best defenseman in the QJAAAHL … also played football and rugby.
Personal: Spiro Goulakos is the son of Socrates and Julie Goulakos … born in Montreal, Que. … Uncle, George Goulakos, played hockey at St. Lawrence and was a draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1978 NHL Draft.
John Lidgett
Calgary, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)
Before Colgate: Attended Bishop Grandin High School and Camrose High School … appeared for the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 2010-11 … also played for the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL in his junior career and earned Rookie of the Year honors … also played for the Calgary Royals … appeared in 15 games for the Mustangs and had 14 points on six goals and eight assists … joined the Kodiaks during the same season and saw the ice in 41 games and had 10 goals and 21 assists for 31 points … tallied 10 goals, which was second in the league, and four assists for 14 points in 20 playoff games with the Kodiaks … finished with 78 points on 31 goals and 47 assists in 104 career games in the AJHL … participated in the World Junior A Challenge for Team Canada West and had a goal and an assist in five games … team finished fourth in the tournament … competed in the 2011 RBC Junior A National Championship in Camrose and the Kodiaks ended up third … was featured as a “player to watch” in the tournament magazine … ranked the 19th-best forward in this year’s recruiting class by CollegeHockeySource.com
Personal: John Edward Lidgett is the son of George and Josie Lidgett … was born in Edmonton, Alta … cousin, Matt Watkins, played college hockey at North Dakota and currently with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL in the Phoenix Coyotes system.
Joe Wilson
North Syracuse, N.Y./Kingston Voyageurs (OJHL)
Before Colgate: Attended Liverpool High School and played one season with the Kingston Voyageurs of the Ontario Junior Hockey League … fourth on the team in points with 56 points on 26 goals and 30 helpers in 46 games … posted 16 power play points on 10 goals and six assists … had eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points in the 2011 OJHL playoffs … played with the Syracuse Stars of the EJHL one year prior to going to Kingston … in one season with the Stars, Wilson was named EJHL Rookie of the Year and had one of the best rookie seasons ever with 63 points on 29 goals and 34 assists … had 11 points on the power play with five goals and six assists … ranked the 25th-best forward in this year’s recruiting class by CollegeHockeySource.com … also played baseball at Liverpool High School.
Personal: Joe Wilson is the son of Steve and Karen Wilson … born in Syracuse, N.Y.
