McALLEN – If Tyler Burton had decided to quit playing hockey before joining the Killer Bees, nobody could have blamed him.

Over the past two seasons, Burton has played in only 28 games and gone through two major surgeries after scoring 82 goals in four college seasons. Two years ago with the Trenton Devils of the ECHL, Burton hit a rut in the ice and tore his left ACL, MCL and meniscus. After missing the remainder of the 2008-2009 season, Burton signed last year with Hannover in the German second division and lasted just one game before the pain he was feeling in his left knee was diagnosed as a broken femur, leaving him on crutches for 12 weeks and out for the rest of the 2009-2010 campaign.

Now Burton, 25, is with the Bees, who opened training camp with a pair of practices Monday. But Burton isn’t just trying to hang on. He’s somebody they’re expecting to be one of their top scorers while he looks to move back up the hockey ladder.
