Mormina to Play in Germany
The Kassel Huskies (Germany) announced Thursday the signing of former Colgate standout Joey Mormina for the 2010-11 season.
Mormina played 77 games and registered 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) and 102 penalty minutes for the Adirondack Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL) during the 2009-10 season.
"He is the player we wanted to have in weeks. It fits perfectly into our concept,” said Huskies sports director Fabian Dahlem. “In Adirondack, he was Alternate Captain -- that is a leading player. He should take a leadership role with us as well. With his size and strength he is to hold together our defense, but also in the game design and play forward, he will set the tone. He will prepare us quite a lot and bring us further forward."
Prior to joining Adirondack, Mormina played 70 games and registered 11 points (two goals, nine assists) and 71 penalty minutes for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL during the 2008-09 season. The 6-6, 220-pound native of Montreal, Quebec also appeared in 12 playoff games for the Penguins.
In addition to his time with Adirondack and Wilkes-Barre Scranton, Mormina played 77 games and registered 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and 96 penalty minutes for the Albany River Rats of the AHL during the 2007-08 season. He was recalled by the Carolina Hurricanes on February 14th and made his NHL debut that night posting four hits vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Mormina played two seasons with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL scoring 24 points (two goals, 22 assists) over 123 games. He also played eight playoff games with the club.
Mormina played four seasons at Colgate. In 141 games with the Raiders, he recorded 56 points (16 goals, 40 assists).
Mormina was originally selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round (193rd overall) in the 2002 NHL Draft.
