ESTERO — Like most rookies, Florida Everblades forward Matt Beca struggled to find his footing at the beginning of the ECHL season. Slowed by injuries and buried on the team’s depth chart, it wasn’t even a given that the 25-year-old would dress for games, let alone contribute.
“I got injured during the preseason and by the time I came back guys had already established their spots,” Beca said. “I just had to wait for an opportunity to work my way back into the lineup, and once that happened I got a few good bounces and played well and I’ve just kind of rolled with it since then.”
Despite tallying just three points (two goals, one assist) in the Everblades’ first 20 games, Beca is now third on the Everblades with 42 points (16 goals, 26 assists) in 51 games. He has also been the recipient of the league’s player of the week honor twice since mid-December.
