POTSDAM — Before the season began many people had low expectations for the Clarkson University men’s hockey team, mostly because of concerns over the squad’s defense after losing junior Mark Borowiecki to professional hockey, as well as veterans Bryan Rufenach, Dan Reed and Tom Pizzo to graduation.
Clarkson was picked to finish in 11th place in ECAC Hockey by the league’s coaches. Two online publications — InsideCollegeHockey.com and U.S. College Hockey Online — both picked the Golden Knights to finish last.
But a month into the season, Clarkson finds itself off to a 5-1-2 overall start and the defense, which features three freshmen among the six regulars, has not been a weakness.
