Conroy's Contribution Nets Special Award
CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames Hockey Club announced
today that former Clarkson standout Craig Conroy has been named the
recipient of the Ralph T. Scurfield Humanitarian Award.
The Scurfield Award is presented each year to the Flames player
who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, determination
and leadership on the ice, combined with dedication to community
service.
“I consider myself lucky that my career brought our family
back to the City of Calgary and the Flames for a second
time,” said Conroy. “We have established life-long
friendships here. I’d like to thank the Flames organization
and specifically our ownership group for putting such a strong
emphasis on family and community involvement for our team.
I’m very proud to have my name engraved on the Scurfield
Award as it represents a major part of what being a professional
athlete is all about.”
Craig Conroy is both a participant and a leader at all of the
Calgary Flames events, and in addition has become a spokesman for
the charitable branch of our hockey club, the Flames Foundation for
Life, for the last two seasons. He is a well-spoken, courteous
player who has brought immense passion to the hockey club,
community and Foundation with unparalleled eagerness and
enthusiasm.
Conroy promotes and raises awareness for the Flames Financial
Assistance Program, a pillar of the Flames Foundation for Life,
which assists families who cannot afford to enroll their kids in
hockey.
Conroy is always a lively and excitable participant in Calgary
Flames community events, including hospital visits, wheelchair
hockey, our annual Poker tournament, and the Flames Charity Golf
Tournament. He is often the voice of the Flames, speaking on behalf
of his teammates at many of these community initiatives.
Conroy has been a finalist twice for the NHL Selke Trophy, once in
1998 while with the St. Louis Blues, and once in 2002 as a member
of the Flames, for the wealth of skill he brings to the defensive
play of his line and his team. At 38-years-old Conroy is a veteran
on the team and in the league. Conroy makes his presence on-ice
well known to the opposition as a playmaker and impact player.
Conroy becomes the 22nd recipient of the Ralph T. Scurfield
Humanitarian Award, joining David Moss (2008-09), Dion Phaneuf
(2007-08), Rhett Warrener (2005-06, 2006-07), Martin Gelinas

builder of the University of Calgary business programs.
Scurfield was a true supporter of all sports, and a believer in
community involvement.
