VANCOUVER — Talk about your welcome to the National Hockey League moment.

It was 16 years ago this month when then-Montreal Canadiens prospect Craig Conroy stepped on to the fabled Montreal Forum ice for the very first time. No sooner had the young centre broken a sweat, when he broke a cardinal rule. The rookie wasted one high on Patrick Roy.

“It wasn’t my best move ever,” recalled the Calgary Flames veteran on Tuesday, giggling at the recollection. “We were just shooting and getting ready for a scrimmage and I somehow hit Patrick square in the head. Next thing you know he started skating out at me, threw his stick in the corner and punched me in the face. All I could do was grab him and hold on. I just kept telling myself ‘if I do anything, I’m dead.’ ”
