VANCOUVER Willie Mitchell emerged from the darkness that has defined his recent life on Thursday, and was clear-minded enough to lecture the NHL   for not heeding players’ warnings on head shots.

The Vancouver Canucks defenceman suffered a concussion on Jan. 16, when he was checked by Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin. He has not yet begun exercising and missed the remainder of the regular season, and the Stanley Cup playoffs, with symptoms such as light and noise sensitivity, headaches and head pressure and the “emotional pain” of not being able to watch hockey, because it was too stressful for his brain.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his injury, an emotional Mitchell said he has been anticipating the opportunity to speak out about the league’s uneven discipline.
