Golden Knights Tab Borowiecki as Captain

Junior Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ONT) has been named captain of the 2010-11 Clarkson University Hockey team, head coach George Roll announced on Friday. Senior Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) and junior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) have been selected alternate captains.

“In his brief two years here, Mark has grown as a player and a person,” stated Roll. “Mark is well respected in the locker room, on campus and in the community. He is a leader who has shown the qualities needed in order to have the privilege to wear the captain’s “C” at Clarkson. Mark leads by example on and off the ice. He gives everything he has and pushes his teammates to do the same. We certainly feel comfortable that Mark will do an outstanding job this year.”

Borowiecki has been the Golden Knights’ best all-around defenseman the past two years and emerged as an offensive force from the blueline last season in his sophomore campaign, recording 19 points and eight goals after posting just two points (1-1) as a rookie. He was honored with Clarkson’s Mike Morrison Coaches’ Award last season for teamwork, hustle and dedication.

“Brandon and Jake are well respected by their teammates and will be good complements to Mark,” said Roll. “Brandon is a fiery, intense player. He has a lot of pride in wearing the Clarkson uniform. He competes at a high level and demands the same from his teammates. Jake had an outstanding second half last season and emerged as one of our go-to guys. He came back this year in great condition and has really taken a leadership role in this team through his hard work. We believe all three will do a outstanding job in getting Clarkson Hockey back on track.”

DeFazio is the Knights’ top returning scorer from last year after posting 26 points on 12 goals and 14 assists through 35 games. He tied for the team lead in power-play markers with six. A North Country native, Morley is one of Clarkson’s toughest players, competing aggressively despite playing with injuries throughout last season. He finished with eight points (5-3), including two power-play markers.

The Knights opened the season with an exhibition game against Carleton University on Sunday, October 3 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Cheel Arena. The 34-game regular season begins on October 8-9 when the Green and Gold compete at the Omaha Stampede at the University of Nebraska-Omaha against the Mavericks and St. Cloud State.
