Mitchell Won't Be Whistled for this Glove Pass

VANCOUVER — Canucks defenceman Willie Mitchell was preparing for practice Wednesday and, as usual, he had on his black longjohns. But he was also wearing a white pair of batting gloves.

Batting gloves? This called for an investigation. Maybe it was the latest cutting-edge, new-wave, feel-good innovation adopted by the Mike Gillis regime. You grab a fungo bat, you hit some pitches, then you put on your skates and play hockey. Hey there, Willie, what gives?

"Ha, ha," laughed Mitchell, not sure if he was going to reveal the secret, although he quickly relented.
