Jean-Francois Houle was still new to the English language
when, as a freshman at Clarkson University, he found himself
studying the plays of William Shakespeare.
"That was tough," said Houle. "On the flip side, the professor
(Lou Ann Lange) went above and beyond and out of her own pocket
bought me all the books that I was required to read in French, so I
would be able to follow in class. She wanted me to learn and was
very helpful. I was very grateful of that gesture."
Houle, a native of LaSalle, Quebec, is now an assistant coach with
the Clarkson men's hockey team and is one of several current or
former Clarkson or St. Lawrence hockey players from non-English
speaking countries who have had to adjust to life in the United
States and the north country.
