Team Notes: Clarkson Hosts Final Regular-Season Games at Cheel
The following article appeared February 17 on the Clarkson Web site.
Four games remain in the regular season, two at home and two on
the road, and the Clarkson University Hockey team needs its best
effort in every one if it wants to secure a home-ice berth in the
upcoming playoffs. Guided by sixth-year head coach George Roll,
associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Jean-Francois
Houle, the Golden Knights own an 8-16-6 overall record and are in
ninth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-9-3 league
mark.
Clarkson, led by senior co-captains Phil Paquet (Quebec City, QUE)
and Tyrell Mason (Dawson Creek, BC), was playing its best hockey of
the season entering last week’s road trip with a 5-1-2 mark
since mid-January. The Knights, however, stumbled over the weekend,
dropping 5-3 games at Princeton and Quinnipiac. After suffering its
first two-game sweep in 2009 conference action, the Green and Gold
are now two points out of a top eight position in ECAC Hockey.
Clarkson, which hosts Dartmouth (Friday - 7pm) and Harvard
(Saturday - 7pm) this weekend before heading to Rensselaer and
Union on February 27 and 28, can finish anywhere from third to 11th
in the standings.
Clarkson’s Class of 2009 – Paquet, Mason, Adam Bellows
(Lancaster, NY), Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT), Shea
Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT), Jon Marshall (Victor, NY), Dan
Tuttle (Augusta, ME) and Mike Willemsen (Stittsville, ONT) - plays
its final regular season games at Cheel Arena this weekend. The
Knights’ seniors have compiled a 73-55-18 overall record,
participated in two NCAA Tournaments (2007, 2008), and played a key
role in Clarkson winning the 2007 ECAC Hockey Tournament
championship and last season’s conference regular season
title (2008). The Green and Gold, led by the senior class, will
look to regain the momentum they generated in late January and set
the groundwork for a return to Cheel for postseason play when they
battle the Ivy League foes this weekend in Potsdam.
