Team Notes: Clarkson Looks to Continue Momentum on Road Trip

The following article appeared February 10 on the Clarkson Web site.

That was then, this is now. The last time the Clarkson University Hockey team left the North Country for a road trip, the Golden Knights had just suffered a demoralizing sweep to their archrival and had just one win in their previous 15 games. As the Green and Gold head back out on the road this weekend, the mood is considerably improved around the Clarkson program.

Guided by sixth-year head coach George Roll, associate coach Greg Drechsel and assistant coach Jean-Francois Houle, the Knights enter the stretch run playing their best hockey of the season. Led by senior co-captains Phil Paquet (Quebec City, QUE) and Tyrell Mason (Dawson Creek, BC), Clarkson owns an 8-14-6 overall record and stands in a three-way tie for sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-7-3 league mark. With six games remaining in the regular season, the Green and Gold are five points out of fourth after opening the new year in 12th place. The Knights, who are 5-1-2 since mid-January, play at Princeton on Friday and at Quinnipiac on Saturday.

Clarkson, which suffered a sweep in non-league play to St. Lawrence (5-1, 2-1) on January 10-11, took three of four points in conference action from the Saints this past weekend. The Knights, behind a two-goal outing from junior Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT), a timely tally by senior Dan Tuttle (Augusta, ME) and a season-high 39-save performance from rookie netminder Richie LaVeau (Arlington Heights, IL), overcame a 2-0 first-period deficit at St. Lawrence on Friday to gain a 3-3 tie at Appleton Arena. On Saturday, Clarkson snapped a five-game winless drought to their North Country foe with a convincing 3-1 victory at Cheel Arena. Freshman Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) put in another solid goaltending effort with 29 saves and three different Knights, senior Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT), freshman Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) and sophomore Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT), found the back of the net.
