RALEIGH -- Erik Cole traded smiles and jokes with Eric Staal and Cam Ward on Thursday. Then he squirted water from a squeeze bottle at Chad LaRose during a practice break, and gave defenseman Joe Corvo a playful push along the boards.

"It doesn't really feel like he ever left," said Rod Brind'Amour, the Carolina Hurricanes' captain.

Cole did leave the Canes -- albeit not for long. After 63 games with the Edmonton Oilers this season, the forward was traded back to Carolina on Wednesday and was on the ice Thursday morning for the Hurricanes' practice at the RBC Center.
